Sauna Sanctuaries – What’s HOT…and What’s NOT!

Posted on 01 December 2007 by Dave Sadowski

Enveloping warmth and rich, indulgent wood are the calming ingredients that make sauna sanctuaries irresistible to bathing members… ease of installation and low-maintenance make them the natural choice for most every wellness facility…and inattention and neglect can make them the most undesirable, undervalued amenity offered.
Whether building or remodeling a sauna environment, or looking for cost-effective ways to improve an existing one, consider the following ideas and enhancements to offer amazing sauna bathing experiences!

HOT – Sauna enjoyment begins with safety. Inform bathers of the actual environment temperature and associated risks before they enter and remind them again inside. Interior and exterior mounted thermometers combined with precautionary bathing signs will effectively educate bathers and help protect both them and the club.

NOT – Do not operate a sauna environment without an appropriate heater guard and effective room lighting. For obvious reasons, a well-constructed guard and proper lighting are instrumental in affording sauna bathing safety.

HOT – Sturdy benching, inviting backrests, and attractive bench skirting enhance relaxation. Wall-mounted backrests are easy to replace when soiled and encourage restful calm, while bench skirting conceals under-bench views completing the environment’s all-wood ambiance. Reward bathers with a routine sauna cleaner application to maintain original wood fragrance and luster.

NOT – Dark, brittle, foul wood indicates true sauna neglect. Wood age, operating room temperature, and ventilation are the combined cause of this undesirable attribute, which should be corrected.

HOT – A thermostatically monitored, ever-ready environment containing multi-tiered benching and ample floor space appeals to most every bather. Upon entering the sauna, the transition to warmth should be greeted with the options of upper or lower level seating or standing.

NOT – Crowded floor plans, cold fl oors and lukewarm sauna rooms repel bathers. Discomforts and inconveniences like these will have members bypassing the sauna and heading straight for the showers.

When designing a sauna environment or specifying equipment to satisfy your facility’s unique operational objectives, the guidance of commercial sauna bath professionals is paramount to your success. Dedicate time to research your equipment. When specified, designed, and installed properly, a sauna room environment affords both bathers and club operators immeasurable benefits.
